One of the most popular new bands in St Pete is Yogo Yogo. A cross between EMF, Shit Disco and Klaxons, the fluoro-sporting four-piece started off as something of a joke, their songs send-up's of clichés about Russia – their song 'Kalinka Malinka' opens with the lyrics: "We are Russian, from Siberia, every day, we drink vodka." According to their MySpace page, Yogo Yogo's fifth member is a brown bear, a tongue-firmly-embedded-in-cheek reference to the native animal that several rather naive Russians we met genuinely believe foreigners think roam wild in their streets.

As unlikely as it may sound, Yogo Yogo have built up a loyal, and growing, following, notorious for putting on a good party wherever they play. In between gigs at festivals and clubs around the country every weekend, the band are currently in the studio, recording an album with one of Russia's top producers, Andrey Samsinov, who's worked with Nick Cave and recorded for Mute. "It's important we sing songs in Russian," says Yogo's backing singer and local performance artist/diva, Ruby Rose. "Because only in this way can we get the strongest reaction from our audience."
