War Tapes, a Los Angeles 4-piece, successfully creates epic anthems of angst, blending the attitude and edge of today’s post-hard-core scene with an appealing nod to 80’s new-wave and post-punk. All the while, War Tapes demonstrates a knack for creating huge hooks and sing-a-long choruses.
Right away they sound like a cross between Alkaline Trio and She Wants Revenge, fast, guitar heavy rock with deep, masculine vocals. They label their sound as “heart-quaking doom-pop,†which is a fairly apt description.
“The Night Unfolds†is the album’s strongest track and begins the album with a flurry of guitar chords, a screech of keyboard and punk-rock-speed drumming. The following track, “Dreaming of You,†slows it down, adds some female backing vocals and seems to be winking in The Cure’s direction.
They definitely have a dark side, not only in their black-clad appearance, but also in the track “She Lied,†singer Neil Popkin laments, “All day long I sit and communicate with the dead corpse that I call my girlfriend.†
