Grand Rapids, MI band Valentiger is poised to release its debut full length album. Power Lines To Electric Times is scheduled for a February 7th release.
The trio draw upon '60s folk rock and Laurel Canyon pop influences to create an enjoyable, melodic sound.
The laid back, breezy California feel of tracks like "Aboveboard" are contrasted with the stark, cold Midwestern strum of "Courses". Harmonica and multiple percussion sounds flesh out the band's The Byrds-meet-The Shins style.
Valentiger are at their best when the trio are harmonizing on vocals. Songs like "Bosses In Their Offices" benefit from solid vocals and a a rhythmic stomp that make them fun jangle pop gems. While Soul Asylum would be hard pressed to pen a twangy pop number as hook-laden as "The Girl That Everyone Forgot".
Not every song on Power Lines To Electric Times is a winner. "Man On Fire" and "Lament" are little more than dull sleepwalks. However, the good far outweighs to blah on the album.
While they may not be there quite yet, Valentiger have what it takes to challenge Fleet Foxes for their '60s folk pop thrown. [Source]
