The Suckers began as a collaboration of three one-man band projects deftly performing on multiple instruments at once. Like fellow bands MGMT and Chairlift, the Suckers have a predilection for funky, eclectic sounds and outlandish costumes, although they have defined a distinct musical palette of their own. In order to complete the band’s sound, the three original members added drummer/keyboardist Brian Aiken to provide the muscle for percussion, although positions in the band are as fluid and dynamic as their music. Inspired by oldies bands in which group choruses were common, the Suckers often break out into raucous chants and rhythmic diversions. “Easy Chairs” begins with an easy-going, sun-baked melody reminiscent of Beach Boys-era surf rock then leads to a romping choir of chants, like a tamer, more melodic Man Man. “Afterthoughts & TV” is an exemplary piece that clearly marks the production work of Yeasayer’s Anand Wilder. Soft piano, trombones, sirens and distorted horns accompany Wolf Parade-style vocals, and the rich layers of sound conclude with a choir of voices and handclaps. In “Beach Queen,” the band sounds like a spaced out Talking Heads, while “It Gets Your Body Movin’” combines folk melodies with theatrical execution full of epic percussion and whistles. The four songs never cross over the line between experimentation and listenability. Like their oldies progenitors, the Suckers strive for pop accessibility, and the result is a rollicking, soul-expanding blend of unique musicianship. [Source]
