Despite having a curiously obtuse stage name, Banjo Or Freakout (aka Alessio Natalizia) has accrued quite the following thanks to a killer shoegaze-style rework of Burial's 'Archangel'. I say off-kilter because rather than cough out yet another lazy edit, he 'covers' the track in his very personal style, taking it from the murky world of South London into the breezy, shoegazing Thames Valley. This love of all things Slowdive translates perfectly to 'Upside Down' and across only five tracks Natalizia deconstructs the sound, building it up again in his uniquely lo-fi style. Somehow the record doesn't totally slip into the nu-gaze mould of acts such as M83 or Ulrich Schnauss - Banjo Or Freakout is just that little bit more deep and untidy, and altogether more engaging for it.
